Silvretta Alps Tour,
19 -26 March2011

This trip was my first solo tour leader tour.

Saturday 19th
Galtur to Jamtal Hut

We all eventually met up at 15:15 in Galtur and finally started skinning upto the Jamtal hut at 16:00. Arriving their by 19:30.

The team consisted of members from as far afield as Afganistan and USA 7 of us in all.

Start of skin in

Sunday
Day tour & tranciever practice.

5km 620m of ascient.

We set out for an easy tour South from the hut up to Pfannknecht 2822m. Had a llok at the snow profile on the way and got to withing 100m distance of the true top. All though it had via ferrata cables up it the last bit was more seriouse and the cables iced over.

Back at hut 14:00 after some lunch did some avalanche tranceiver location practice. All the group improved after several sessions.

Monday
Jamtal hut to Tuoi Hut 9km 915m of ascient.

Left the Jamtal at 0809, Arrived at Ht. Jam Spitz ski depot 12:00, Climbed to the top but did not stay too long due to the cold wind. Note the route shown from the Jamjosh west down Vadret Tuoi glacier look to be a long drop to start and no one had decended that way. We decided to decend the way others were, which as clockwise (east & south) round the Ht. Jam Spitz and down it's southern bowl.

Great ski down to 2500m. Toto fell aquadly after lunch and injured her knee. She managed to make it to the Tuoi hut which was just over 1Km away.

Tuesday
Tuoi Hut to Wiesbadener hut

We climbed the Dreilanderspitz(3197m), the climb get a bit tricky near the summit We reached the Wiesbadener hutte(2443m) by mid afternoon, where we enjoyed Kaiserschmarren mit Apfelmus and Gulaschsuppe mit Brot on the sunny patio. Beer and Gluhwein were delivered by the animated Slovakian waitresses Andrea and Rosie as we watched the filming of an old fashioned ski movie with antique wooden skis and costumes. Helicopters were abuzz shuttling cameras and crews.

Wednesday
Piz Buin

The high point of the tour was literally the Piz Buin(3312m). We were frequently told "contrary to belief it's not the tallest mountain in the Silvretta". But it was tall enough for an exhilarating climb and magnificent views, also tall enough for Ian to phone Afghanistan.

Thursday
Silvrettahorn

On the last full day we were all together we climbed the Silvertta horn (3244m).

Friday
Wiesbadener hut to Galtur

Friday morning Bob & Bill headed back to civilization. Those remaining had one final fling climbing the Ochsenkopl (3057m) before returning to the Valley via the Jamtal hut for a beer..
