Ski 2004 January

Dates 24th to 31st January

Zermatt

Great week but very cold around -5C in Village max all week. Link to Italy only open twice due to High winds. Most of resort closed Thursday due to snow and high winds.

The Apartment was probably the best to date but ran out of hot water like most do straight after the lifts close.

Info about the apartment

I have found an apartment that looks OK and good rates of hire, 1610CHF for the week. It works out to be less than £130 each for the apartment (on 7-1-04 = £123). We are booked in as of 14-7-03, contract signed and returned 22-7-03. We need to pay in cash, they don't do credit cards. Even though their website has not been updated this year we have received a Christmas card from them. The cheap deals are not on during our week, only the week starting the 10th Jan.

I confirmed with the apartment on 7-1-04 that we are OK to pay cash before we leave. We can leave gear there but the apartments are usually ready by lunch time.

Getting there

Traveling in Alan's Previa. Leave Manchester at 10:00, Pick Martin up on way. Tunnel booked for 17:00. Over night in Dijon Premier Classe (North) 3 twins booked, they don't seem to do triples anymore. Leave Dijon early to arrive at Zermatt for Lunch. I have paid for the tunnel, it cost £171.34 which is £28.50 each.

We can park up at Täsch , were nearly all the car parks will then taxi us direct to the apartment. The parking (in door) costs about £40 for the week and the taxi about £10 each return. I have booked parking with Taxi Metro looks as though it will be 196CHF assuming the taxi fare is single not return, that equates to 33CHF £15 each.

Getting back

We are booked on the 10:00 tunnel on the Sunday. Overnight booked at Bethune.

Ski Hire and Pass

Ski hire everywhere seems to be 190CHF (£90) for VIP skis. The Ski pass for 6 days with skiing into Italy (Cervinia) is £170, the pass is like at St. Anton i.e. you stand near a detector and it's all automatic. The apartment we are staying could well do a package which includes a day skiing with a guide, but they have not updated their website yet for 2004 and they didn't mention it in any correspondence. The Christmas card indicates it is only for the week of the 10th Jan!

Total cost

Its looking like it will be less than £550 each excluding food and booz.
