Kandersteg August 2005

Whilst at scout camp at the International Scout Centre for 2 weeks. I managed to grab a few days with Paul to do some serious climbing.

Bunderspitz 2546m.

Early in the first week we gave everyone the opportunity to climb this easy peak.

Via Ferrata

Keith & Paul took the opportunity to climb the newly opened Via Ferrata up the face of the Alme cable car. Rated a grade 4 and well engineered and very exposed in places.

Frundenhorn 3368 m NW Ridge

The route is rated PD in the guide book and no mention of any climbing grade. Getting past the bergschrund is much harder, at least IV+, and some of the rock climbing before you reach the snow field is probably III. We had not gone prepared for a rock climb & only had 30m of rope, a few crabs and slings but worst of all no rack of gear. Having said that, the route was well marked (going up) with the occasional fixed protection but not always where it was needed.

This is the first big mountain summit I have climbed where there was only room for one at a time on the top (Paul's photo is not quite on the top). The weather was starting to give us concern as we topped out, so we wasted no time there. Descending was frustratingly slow once off the snow field. Mainly due to our short length of rope and the need to protect each other most of the decent. Fortunately the weather held off until we were back at the hut, just! It took us as long to descend as it had to climb. We descended from the hut in an thunder storm.
