Summary of recent activity
Winter skills (Feb) new venue is good both from the facilities and the location for easy access to required terrain. The 3 day format was good. We have booked the same venue for 15 – 19 Feb 2012 i.e. 4 days.
Fitness was an issue for a few, it is important that potential leaders are not a liability. After some discussion no decision was made as to how to overcome this issue.
Detailed planning for next year’s event will start at the next activity team meeting in October.
Leader climbing club
The attendance is still not great. It was decided to promote it again and set a meeting location at Awesome walls in case that is an issue.
Forthcoming workshops
Basic Hill walking
Dave Heatley offered his group’s meeting place as an alternative venue to county office, which was accepted. Ken and Ann are only available for the theory evening, Keith and Alan are not available for the theory but are OK for the Sunday practical session. Keith will look to get 1 or two more instructors. There are around 10 booked on so far.
Wall climbing workshop
After some confusion on dates it was agreed, that the 4 sessions are all on a Thursday first 2 at Awesome wall and the second 2 at Linnet Clough, with a break for Easter in between. The dates published by county and on the website are correct. There are only 4 booked on so far.
Security on Steep ground
To be held at same venue as past years. There are only 3 booked on so far.
Kayaking
Chris Harbut is to run another Kayaking workshop. Sat 21 May in Glossop pool 19:00 to 20:00 and Sunday 22 May at Linnet Clough pool from 10:00.
Climbers badge
Gareth thought that there was not going to be one this year.
Human Error document
We discussed the document written by Marcus Bailie and forwarded to us by Alan Pashley of Stockport youth services.
Most of the point are aimed at big commercial providers of adventurous activities. The recommendation to take breaks and not do the same thing all the time is already adopted by Linnet Clough. We need to ensure that these recommendations are adhered to on big county events.
We also discussed about using karabiners to clip climbers in rather than tying in. It was agreed that in some instances clipping would be better. These would be on taster sessions where time is of the essence, as a double check can be done by the climber clipping in and then the instructor checking.
